Growing Independence - For Devon Residents

Growing Independence is a two night residential course for teenagers and young adults with a physical or learning disability aged 16 to 25 years old, who given the right support, have a chance at living independently. This event is for families from DEVON.

Taking place at our beautiful farm, you will have the chance to explore the grounds, participate in activities and learning about everyday tasks including:

Cooking – cooking healthy, nutritious meals from cheap, sustainable ingredients.
Cleaning  - cleaning own rooms and communal areas.
Laundry – using the washing machine.

Gardening – simple grow-your-own skills.

Learning new skills and finding out about our environment from our knowledgeable staff whilst socialising and creating friendships with other families.

 

Magdalen Farm has worked with children over many years who are now transitioning into adulthood and parents are telling us that their teenagers/young adults are facing many additional challenges and that there is a gap in gaining skills to live more independently. 

Specialist Magdalen staff will be teaching the teenagers/young people who will also take part in activities, having fun, gaining self awareness and valuable life skills. 

Help to feed and look after our farm animals plus make friends and socialise spending time with others in the group and gaining a tolerance in accepting differences.

 We will tailor the event to suit the needs of the individuals in the group so it is important you let us know in advance of any requirements you and your family may have.

Catering and Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided in our converted farm buildings with 1 room designated per family with shared bathroom facilities.  

All meals will be provided – just let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements, we will be only too happy to accommodate.

We hope that families make the most of their stay and take the opportunity to relax and have fun in great company. To help create the atmosphere in the evening, we’ll provide a firepit, kindling, logs and cheese and biscuits.  A fridge will be available for you to bring your own drinks and snacks to enjoy around the campfire. Don’t forget your cards or games!

We have a list of shops, restaurants, takeaways and pubs so that you can pop out if wish to.  (Children will need to be supervised by a responsible adult).

 

Family

Additionally, the whole family can stay and have their own break whilst their teenager/young adults is having fun gaining skills.  Families can go off to the Jurassic coast or stay on the farm relaxing, it’s up to you.  Just be back at for 5:30pm for supper which will be cooked by the teenagers/young adults.  Additional family places will cost £20 per person per night.  A bedroom will be provided for each family.

Magdalen is a working organic farm set in the glorious countryside of Dorset & Somerset.  At the heart of our farm is an education centre, from which we offer activities with accommodation and delicious meals. Our aim is to encourage as many people as possible from all walks of life to enjoy the great outdoors.

All Terrain Wheelchair Hire

On-site we have 3 all-terrain wheelchairs (bookable in advance) to help those less able guests to get around the farm.

 We also have a dedicated "Changing place" for those that may need it (please bring your own hoist if required).

Our Growing Independence  event provides a safe environment where participants can learn valuable life lessons that will help them become more independent. Our experienced team of professionals are on hand to guide each individual through the process of developing these essential skills in a way that suits them best. Plus there’s plenty of fun activities too!
